Interview with Rex and Joice - Inksurge

Hello there, please introduce your self and a short bio too, please.
Rex is a nocturnal rebel who enjoys sucking coffee. Joyce is a malfunctioned robot who enjoys staring at blank spaces. The baristas were summoned by Kaldi of Caffa Ethopia to hyperactively join in the design world.
Brewed in Manila, Philippines in 2002. Coffee junkies Joyce and Rex founded Inksurge as a stimulant to exercise their creative drive and an excuse for waking up late.
Both have worked for various clients and companies before getting the right brew in Inksurge. The passion for design led them to creative outlets in the local scene, by winning the best site in the ARTS category for 2 consecutive years (2003-2004) in the Philippine Web Awards, and in the international scene, by participating in some online/offline projects such as Place, OFFF, RangerBastards, Jeremyville Sketchel, and many more.

What do you do know? What’s your current projects?
We know which coffee is right and which clients to work with =)
We are currently working on an album packaging for a new band here in Manila called "Pedicab". Also busy working on with book projects and websites in the entertainment industry locally and abroad.

What are your goals for the future?
Rex - To have a savvy studio near the beach.
Joyce - travel to every corner of the world.

Please tell us, how did you start to work together on Inksurge?
Inksurge was formed to be an outlet for the two of us. Way before, we have been working inside an IT firm and got bored doing the same old thing so we decided to create something new and experiment during our spare time. The experience was good and the exploration part was exciting, so we decided to keep things running. We got a good exposure from the OFFF 03 Festival in which we are asked to illustrate for the event and even landed as speakers during the 2004 event.

What’s going on with Halfproject? It’s offline already a lot of time, do you really plan to relaunch?
Rex - Halfproject is still there and yes its still breathing. We had to close it down for the meantime because the times before are different nowadays. Before, we have all the time doing it, but since every members of it became busy running their lives and making a living..hehe. Drew is now working on the new DrewEuropeo.com for her commercial works, Nicc is now with Viper Comics doing Random Encounter and Rex is busy with Inksurge. We have plans touching on it again and right now we are already starting =)

A questions about your personal life, outside of pc. How do you live, how do you rest? Maybe any other hobbies?
We spend our spare time watching new movies and relaxing at the Spa..hehehe. Constant Weird combination of hobbies are people watching and collecting toys (gundam SD and Astroboy)
We operate almost 24 hours a day, resting about 3 to 4 hours a day. Well we both enjoy our work, its tiring but its rewarding =)

Where do you think, web design is going? How do you think it will look like in 5 years?
Rex - More interactive, maybe more monster hyperspeed connections and internet tv everywhere. We think everybody is almost connected to each other by the year 2010.
Joyce - motion will invade our ass. and there will be an internet policeman to catch all spammers out there.

You are in Asia, right? Did you ever think to move to US? Why?
Yes we are located in South East Asia.
Rex - US? ha!! Asia is a wonderful place to live in, so much stuff to explore, everyday is different, everyday is exciting.
We never thought of moving to US, we love it here in Asia. Maybe moving out, but of course wanted near our homeland =)
Joyce - that's hard to say, you'll never really know. i never thought i would have lived there for 3 years some 4 years ago. but at this moment, i'm happy being home and have no plans to go back there.

What can you suggest to a newbie, who just start to do design?
Rex - Smell the coffee, do the boogie. Do your stuff, stay away from the crowd.
Joyce - get a hobby.

Hey, zoorex, are you going to put more free brushes on your site?
Rex - Zoorex.com is in the state of chemotheraphy at the moment, but its slowly recovering..hehehehe yes, will be setting up a brush section goodies again.

A question about motion graphics. Any plans for the future to do motions?
We would love to!

Who is the most famous person you ever met?
Rex - Florian Schmitt and Alexandra Jugovic of Hi-Res, the two Mikes of WWFT and Peter Saville
Joyce - Christopher Doyle aside from the one rex mentioned
