Hello there, please tell us your short biography, how did you get into design and what inspired you.My name is Chuck Anderson. I am an artist/illustrator from the Chicago suburbs. In short, I've been artistic all my life, went through grade school, junior high, and high school taking lots of art classes, graduated high school, didn't go to college, started sending my own personal artwork to potential clients, starting getting some work from it, and the rest is history. Now I'm freelancing full time and its going great. I've been inspired by my family, friends, my faith in God, a lot of music - everything from jazz and hip-hop to metal and electronic...Very inspired by tattoos, gang culture, and suburban living. Specifically, I have been inspired by people like my partner with the BRILLIANCE, Ben Gott...he showed me what I needed to do to make money and be successful on my own terms without schooling. My parents and my girlfriend for encouraging and supporting me...the list goes on...
Where are you located and where do you work? Current projects?I am in Tinley Park, a south suburb of Chicago. I live in my apartment and work in my apartment, in one of its 3 bedrooms I turned into an office. It's very nice and I like it a lot more than when I lived with my parents which was only like...7 months ago.. Keep in mind I'm only 20 though! Current projects...I'm working on some pharmeceutical advertising with Saatchi & Saatchi, some big collaborations with RBK, Teen People Magazine, and doing some of my own personal work. I'm sure lots more interesting stuff is to come too. Also speaking at several colleges in the coming months.
What is design for you?Design...for me I don't look at what I do as design. I look at it as just creating. I'm not a designer, I'm more of an artist. I make things that look really nice. Occassionally I get the opportunity to try to problem-solve, which is what design leans more toward, but for the most part I do what I do best, and that is to make things visually stimulating and appealing.
You mainly do illustrations, why not flash, photo, motion?I never really picked up on flash. I'd love to learn it but it's a whole different kind of thinking I never was taught or tried to teach myself. I do do photography, quite a bit actually. I have to do it a lot for my work actually. I love photography. Motion I just never really learned but I may be picking up a nice video camera soon to start getting my hands dirty with that medium...
What are your goals? My goals are to continue to be successful and keep my story and hustle the same. It's all about working and hustling to get new jobs and to get paid. I want to support a wife and family in the coming years and I have a head start by not having to pay for college and getting right into the work part of it. So my goals are just to continue to be successful, inspire people, and speak at more events. I also want to launch some new product lines that are completely separate from NoPattern. Can't talk too much about them just yet though.
How did you come up with your site name? Nopattern.I came up with it about 3 years ago. Maybe more. It wasn't really planned out to be something THAT meaningful, but I stuck with the name it's come to mean so much to me now. Just represents and means to stay fresh and progressive...no patterns, not stagnant, never repeating.
How do you see webdesign in 5 next years? How do you think it can be changed?I don't care much for or about web design. I want more people to aim for simplicity and usability. Even though I'm on a superfast connection, I don't want to try using a site that has a million sections and needs me to do the work. Sites should do most of the work for us, specifically portfolio websites. Don't make people think too hard about how to get from point A to point B.
Other hobbies? What do you do when you don't work?Hang out with friends or my family, a lot with my brother Eric...go to the bookstore, play poker, play Scrabble, just chill. I don't get out much, I'm not really a partyer at all. I don't really drink much at all and I just like to be low key and have a good time with good friends.
Do you care about your health from youth? Don't smoke, don't drink?I don't smoke cigarettes, but I can't turn down a good cigar with some friends or my girlfriend...drinks only at social events, minimally...I'm not even 21 so, I mean..it's not that easy for me anyways. But if it's good, I'll have a bit...Ask me again in a year, we'll see if my answer is the same or if I'm a raging alcoholic.
Do any sports?I work out at the gym but...ok no. No sports. Poker..?
What would you suggest to young people who start their careers in design industry?Stay focused and work 24/7 if that's what it takes for you to be successful. Be ready to cancel plans with friends for the sake of your young and growing career if you are really serious about it. Think about why you are doing what you are doing, how it's going to help you in the future. It's all about the future...10 years from now is going to be VERY affected by the way I work today and how I manage, save, and use my money too. And also, try not to look at too many artists sites. You'll get very affected and try to copy too much. Do your thing...
Your favorite website? Why?www.drudgereport.com - because Matt Drudge is the first to tell about everything, I love the site layout, and he's a very, very bold sensationalist and I like that. make things fun and dramatic, cause a stir. All successful people will tell you that. Also, Bluenile.com is great for researching diamonds and it's fun to look at. And Big-boys.com. Ha...
The most beautiful woman on the world? How can I not say my girlfriend Holly? Hmm, other than her though, in a celebrity kind of way...Something about Keira Knightly and Julia Stiles...Yeah.
Well, that's all for now, any last comments?Get off the computer and go help somebody. You have to live for yourself because you're human, but you need to try to carve out time to help other people, no matter if it's a big or small way...it's the way of the world, people helping people. Keep me and a group from my church in your thoughts and prayers, we are going to help with hurricane relief in Biloxi Mississippi this week. I will get more out of this upcoming trip than I would out of getting a big new job. You can't match the feeling of helping people. Except maybe with a big bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I really like that cereal.
